Sarah Farooqi - Artist

See more of Sarah's wonderful work at the end of this post. She is a great artist with a unique style.

Who are you?
My name is Sarah Farooqi and I am an artist/illustrator living and working from my home studio in Morpeth.

What is your business?
I paint landscapes, townscapes and illustrated maps with pen and watercolour. Many of these are available to buy as fine art prints in a selection of craft shops and galleries throughout Northumberland, including the Alnwick Garden, Bamburgh Castle and the National Trust shops at Seahouses and on Holy Island. I also enjoy working on private commissions.

How did you get started with what you do?
From as early as I can remember I’ve loved drawing and painting. I trained as a graphic designer, then took a wrong move into corporate video graphics and decided to leave all that behind to work as a teacher, then a full time mum. Ten years ago I volunteered to work on a school art project but found it really difficult not to grab the paint brushes off the children and do it myself! I began drawing again soon after and I haven’t stopped since.

What do you like most about living in Northumberland?
I love the wide open spaces and the wonderful coastline, with its empty golden beaches, ruined and not so ruined castles and lighthouses, fascinating history and fabulous places to eat and drink.

What’s your greatest achievement?
I spent nearly a year creating a huge illustrated map of the Howick Hall Estate (near Alnwick) which now forms the centrepiece of their visitor centre. It has a fantastic Arboretum and the café sells the best tea in Northumberland. Parts of the estate were previously unmapped so I had to work closely with the head gardener and other members of the team who advised me on the important plants and wildlife to include, as well as where the paths should go. It’s been so nice to hear the feedback from visitors who seem to really like it!

How can people find out more about what you do?
The best place is my website: www.sarahfarooqi.co.uk and I also have a Facebook page www.facebook.com/sarahfarooqiart.

Wow! The patience you must have to draw and paint something like this! Amazing!
