Red Lion Alnmouth 18th Century Coaching Inn

The Red Lion Inn, Alnmouth

The landords ….
We’re Jane and ‘Mac’ Mchugh and have owned The Red Lion Inn in the heart of the picturesque village of Alnmouth for over 13 years (definitely a lucky number for us). We decided from the outset that we’d like to build a warm, welcoming ambience serving well prepared, fresh, seasonal food together with a fantastic range of crowd-pulling craft real ales, all washed down with a friendly measure of great customer service!

All about the Red Lion Inn, Alnmouth
Formerly an 18th Century coaching inn, this pub has been transformed and now provides seven luxury bedrooms with an atmospheric dining room and cosy, relaxed bar area. Alternatively on warmer days, you can opt to eat alfresco in the sheltered beer garden, with its own garden bar and unique viewing platform which takes advantage of the spectacular views over the Alnmouth estuary. Just perfect to relax and unwind after a walk along Northumberland’s stunning Heritage Coastline.

How did you get started?
Neither of us had any real experience of the hospitality industry when we purchased The Red Lion. I’d been a nurse and Mac was still serving with the RAF. It was a steep learning curve but we knew what we wanted to create and with sheer grit and determination, we set about building a strong business with a great reputation. We’ve learnt so much over the years (sometimes the hard way) but offering a warm welcome still remains at the heart of everything we do.

This could not have been achieved without our hardworking and dedicated team of staff and our chef, Ricky, who has been with us for over 10 years now. We’re really just one, big happy family and we’ve been told many times by our customers that this sense of unity is very apparent when they visit the pub.

What do you like most about living in Northumberland?
It’s hard to pick just one thing, so we’d both say the magnificent scenery and the people. There’s still an incredible sense of community in the area and the Heritage Coastline is simply stunning – it lifts the soul!

What’s your greatest achievement?
Still being married despite working and living together ….
